Ukraine proposed introducing a temporary agreement with the aggressor country of the Russian Federation on mutual renunciation of attacks on airports as a possible first step towards resuming peace negotiations. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga told reporters about this on May 11 in Brussels during a meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union, he was quoted by Politico.
According to Sibiga, we are talking about a so-called truce regarding airports, which could become a narrow but practical element for launching a dialogue with Russia.
The head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry suggested that Moscow might be interested in such an agreement, since Kyiv’s long-range strikes make important Russian airports such as Sheremetyevo (Moscow) and Pulkovo (St. Petersburg) vulnerable. At the same time, he stressed that any European efforts should complement, and not replace, negotiations with the participation of the United States.
The initiative was also discussed by European diplomats, who recognize the need for a more active role for the EU in the peace process, but emphasize that the terms of a possible dialogue with Moscow must first be determined.
“The EU cannot act at random,” said a European official.
