Former Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro and his former deputy, Marcin Romanowski, are being pursued by the Polish prosecutor's office as the main suspects in the Justice Fund scandal.

Ziobro has had political refugee status in Hungary since January, granted by former Prime Minister Viktor Orban. On Saturday, the parliament in Budapest elected Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar, who announced the extradition of PiS politicians.

According to the information provided by wPolityce, Ziobro flew from Hungary to the USA on the same day. “The politician has an American visa (not asylum),” we read. In turn, the TVN24 editorial office received a photo from one of the viewers showing the former Minister of Justice at the airport in Newark, New Jersey.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented on the matter in an interview with “Fakt”. As it turns out, the ministry does not yet have official information confirming Ziobro's departure from Hungary. Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Maciej Wewiór reminded that the PiS politician's Polish passport was withdrawn. “We don't know what documents he would travel on and whether it's even true,” he said.

The Hungarian authorities, led by Viktor Orban, granted Ziobro international protection at the beginning of January. In February 2026, the District Court for Warsaw-Mokotów agreed to arrest the former head of the Ministry of Justice. Then the prosecutor's office issued an arrest warrant for him and submitted an application for the issuance of a European Arrest Warrant.

The prosecutor's office brought charges against Zbigniew Ziobro in an investigation into the functioning of the Justice Fund during the PiS government. Investigators want to accuse him of leading an organized criminal group and using his position for criminal activities. The former minister allegedly committed 26 crimes, including ordering his subordinates to break the law in order to provide selected entities with subsidies from the Justice Fund. According to the prosecutor's office, the politician interfered in the preparation of competition offers and allowed funds to be awarded to unauthorized entities.
