Semyon Ranopashets

On this day, the Russian Orthodox Church venerates Simeon, a relative of the Lord, a holy martyr, one of the 70 apostles.

Semyon (Simeon) received his nickname due to the fact that plowing had already begun everywhere in Rus'. For the northern and central regions it was considered early. “Plow early – the harvests are good,” people said. But there was no rush to sow either. It was customary to sow bread only in warm weather and in warm soil. To understand whether the soil was ready to accept grain, they placed both hands on it and checked how warm it was. They also said that it was time to plow when the forest began to turn into leaves.
