However, the figures of the last years seriously contradict the financier of the “railways”. During Cristi Balaj's mandate, which began in November 2021, CFR Cluj went through one of the most profitable periods in the club's history in terms of transfers.

In the three full seasons of the “Balaj era” + part of the current one, the Transylvanians recorded a total increase of 23.47 million euros from transfers:

• 2025-2026: +7.76 million euros

  • (revenues 8.56 million euros, expenses 0.80 million euros)

• 2024-2025: +6.90 million euros

  • (income 11.05, expenses 4.15)

• 2023-2024: +8.16 million euros

  • (income 8.95, expenses 0.79)

• 2022-2023: +0.65 million euros

  • (income 1.78, expenses 1.71)

Practically, in every season during this period, CFR Cluj came out on top in terms of transfers.

In contrast, before Balaj's arrival in management, the club's balance sheet was negative.

In the 2017-2021 interval, CFR accumulated a total minus of 1.23 million euros on the transfer market:

• 2021-2022: -0.68 million euros

Thus, although Ioan Varga talks about the “gang of spendthrifts” and about a faulty administration, the financial data show that it was precisely the recent period, now criticized by the boss, that brought the highest receipts from transfers for CFR Cluj.

The most important receipts from transfers were the following

• In the financial report for the year 2025, the group from Gruia registered total operating income of approximately 9.0 million euros, but expenses reached approximately 14.8 million euros, which generated a net loss of approximately 6.2 million euros;

• Last year, the team patronized by Ioan Varga had a profit of approximately 630,000 euros, the first year in “plus”, after a four-year break;

• The transfers brought an almost non-existent profit, of approximately 10,000 eurosgiven that in the previous season the club reported earnings of over 6.2 million euros from this area;

• The debts of the CFR Cluj club rise to a significant level, with short-term debts of approximately 24.3 million euros;

• In the long term, the debts are approximately 1.2 million euros, representing obligations to the tax authorities. Thus, the total debt reaches approximately 25.5 million euroshighlighting a considerable financial pressure on the club;
