Infrastructure also suffered

The head of the regional military authorities said that on the night from Monday to Tuesday, the Russian army attacked the Poltava Oblast (in the north-east of Ukraine) with missiles and combat unmanned aerial vehicles. Direct hits and falling shrapnel were reported in two places, he added.

“As a result of the attack, industrial plants were damaged. 3,480 customers were left without gas supplies. The railway infrastructure was also damaged,” Diakiwnycz said.

On Monday, Reuters reported via Russian state media that Russian leader Vladimir Putin had decided to introduce a two-day ceasefire in the war with Ukraine, effective on May 8 and 9. This is related to the celebration of the anniversary of the USSR's victory over the Third Reich in the Great Patriotic War, as Moscow refers to the part of World War II in which the Soviet Union fought on the side of the anti-Hitler coalition in 1941-45.

Later in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a “regime of silence”, or a cease-fire in the war with Russia, which is to come into force at midnight from Tuesday to Wednesday. The leader noted that so far no one has officially approached the authorities in Kiev with a proposal to stop military operations. “From now on, we will react symmetrically. It is time for Russian leaders to take concrete steps to end this war, since the Russian Ministry of Defense recognizes that it will not organize a parade in Moscow without Ukraine's consent,” he said.
