Chief of US Central Command (CENTCOM) Adm. Brad Cooper said Monday that Iran attacked U.S. ships and merchant ships, and in response, U.S. forces sank six attack boats belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

As Cooper said during a telephone news conference, Iran fired cruise missiles at American ships and merchant ships, but the attack was repelled. In response to Tehran's actions, American Apache and Seahawk helicopters destroyed six small attack boats.
The Washington Post reported that the commander of US forces in the Middle East did not answer a question about whether the exchange of fire meant the end of the ongoing ceasefire.
The admiral said that US forces had “prepared” a mine-free route for merchant ships, and two ships had already passed through this route on Monday as part of the launched “Freedom Project” to enable transit through Hormuz. He added that more units are on their way.
Cooper acknowledged that Iran had sought to disrupt the mission in recent hours by launching drones and missiles. When asked how many ships were hit by Iranian forces, he refused to give a number so as not to make Iran's task easier.
– You know what they have been able to achieve so far – he said, quoted by Newsmax.
