Current United manager Michael Carrick, who played under Ferguson, admitted he was shocked by the news before kick-off but hoped the 3-2 win against their arch-rivals would cheer the former manager.

Sir Alex Ferguson began his coaching career in 1974 at East Stirlinghshire, St. Mirren and Aberdeen, and in 1985-1986 he was the Scotland coach.
