Folk calendar
Proklov Day
On this day the memory of the holy martyr Januarius (Iannuarius) and with him the martyrs Proclus (Proculus), Sossius, Faustus and others are celebrated.
Among all the saints revered on this day, the Russian people chose the name of Proclus for the name of the holiday – firstly, as the most common among the peasants, and secondly, as consonant with the word “curse”. The fact is that on this day it was customary to curse evil spirits. The old people went outside the outskirts, stood facing west (this side of the world was considered a symbol of darkness) and uttered incantations. The evil forces were retreating.
It was time for fun – that’s what they called the period of games and dancing. On Proklov Day, the girls danced around the apple tree and sang songs. Another tree, the bird cherry, was used to judge the weather. The earlier it bloomed, the hotter the summer we expected.
