The announcement was made on Monday by the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Transport, Horațiu Cosma, who described the moment as a significant one for the development of the project.
“Good news on the Sibiu – Pitesti Highway: tomorrow the Robești tunnel will break through the Olt Valley. A new important moment for Romania's infrastructure: the Robești tunnel, one of the seven tunnels of the Boita – Cornetu mountain section, will see the light of day seven months after the start of the works”. the official said.
The tunnel, the construction of which began last October, has a length of almost one kilometer and represents a large-scale work. For its construction, approximately 200,000 cubic meters of rock were excavated, 60,000 cubic meters of concrete, 4,000 tons of steel and approximately 70 tons of explosives were used to dislodge the hard rock.
According to Cosma, this is the second tunnel pierced on the Sibiu – Pitesti Highway, after the one in Curtea de Argeș, on section 4.
The project data highlight the complexity of the works on the Olt Valley: 31 kilometers of mountain highway, seven tunnels with a total length of about 5 kilometers, 48 bridges and viaducts totaling about 13 kilometers, as well as over 15 million cubic meters of excavations and fills.
Currently, works are underway on approximately one third of the total length of the mountain sections between Boita and Tigveni. The official stated that, this summer, the authorities will complete the revision of the environmental agreement and issue the last building permits for this road link considered essential between Bucharest, Transylvania and the rest of Europe.
Also this summer, the opening of traffic on the Curtea de Argeș – Tigveni section is scheduled, which will mark the inauguration of the first drilled highway tunnel in Romania.
“The Sibiu – Pitesti highway is no longer just a promise. We already have sectors in circulation, active construction sites and spectacular works that will bring important benefits for the development of the country”, the secretary of state also sent.
