The tips of garlic feathers turn yellow for three reasons – they were revealed by the author of the Zen channel “Volga Garden”. The main and main thing is the lack of nitrogen: melt water washes it out of the soil, the plant starves, the tips turn yellow and dry, growth slows down.
The second reason is a lack of potassium and magnesium. The first macroelement is responsible for water metabolism and immunity, the second is responsible for the synthesis of chlorophyll. If these macroelements are not enough, then the edges of the leaves dry out and turn yellow, the vein in the center remains green, and the leaves curl.
The third reason is acidic soil, while garlic does well in neutral or slightly alkaline soil.
Determining the specific cause is not difficult. Take the yellowed garlic leaves and place them in a container of water for 2 hours:
- If the water becomes cloudy and begins to have an unpleasant odor, this indicates bacterial rot.
- The water is clear, but the leaves are still yellow? This means garlic needs nitrogen.
- If the edges of the leaves are yellow and the middle is green, urgently feed the plants with potassium and magnesium.
How to stop yellowing of garlic: procedure
The author proposes the following algorithm of actions:
- Pour the garlic with ammonia solution (2 tbsp per 10 liters of water). This form of nitrogen is absorbed by garlic even in unheated soil. For 1 sq. m. 2 liters of solution is enough. After 3 days the leaves will be green.
- 2 days after nitrogen fertilizing, pour the ash infusion over the garlic (1 glass per 10 liters of water – leave for 24 hours). The ash contains potassium, magnesium, and many useful trace elements.
- Deoxidize the soil with dolomite flour or ash.
The key is to act quickly and not wait until all the garlic turns yellow.
Mistakes when caring for garlic
Do not add fresh manure to the soil – it will burn the garlic roots. It is also harmful to water it with cold water – use settled warm water. Water garlic sparingly as high humidity causes rotting.
Apply fertilizing only to pre-moistened soil.
