The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) responded briefly, after the Superliga clubs they officially requested the postponement of the start of the new season. The 16 teams, led by the initiator Dani Coman, warned that they do not accept the date of July 10 and proposed to start the championship a week later, citing the lack of rest time for the players.

Almost 24 hours after the protest initiated by the clubs, the forum led by Răzvan Burleanu conveyed that the start of the 2026-2027 season will take place according to the calendar approved in the Executive Committee meeting and reminded the clubs that the start date of July 10 was approved by their representatives in that meeting.

It remains as they decided! When does the 2026-2027 Super League season start

Although the clubs wanted the start date of the new season to be July 17, the season will still start on the 10th, and the Romanian Supercup will be played on the 4th, FRF confirmed today through an official statement.

“As a result of the information appearing in the media, the FRF administration specifies:

In the last meeting of the Executive Committee, on April 16, 2026, the competitive calendar of the Superleague was approved in the form in which it was presented by Mr. Gino Iorgulescu.

We mention that the president of the Professional Football League specified in the plenary meeting that the proposal comes as a result of the consultation with the clubs in the Super League”, stated the FRF.

The reason why Superliga clubs wanted to postpone the start of the new season

Dani Coman, the president of FC Argeș, explained to GSP.ro on Wednesday the reasons behind this request.

He sounded the alarm about the program to which the Romanian players are subjected. According to him, the interval of only 12 days between the end of the championship and the reunion of the groups is too short for performance.

On January 2, the vast majority of teams began training this year. The players had no time for rest, vacation, relaxation. Now we finish the competitive season on May 26th and on June 7th we have the reunion.

On the 8th we should start work. It's way too little! You can not! Players need physical and mental rest.

If we want the level of Romanian football to increase, then the opinion of the clubs in the Super League must also be taken into account.
