The announcement comes amid growing tensions between Washington and its European allies, particularly over its stance on the Iran conflict.
“A decision will be made very soon”the White House leader broadcast on his Truth Social platform, suggesting that the US administration is considering a major recalibration of its military presence in Europe, according to Le Figaro.
Trump's statements come after, on Wednesday, he had already criticized Germany and suggested reducing the American military contingent on its territory.
Tensions escalated after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that “the Americans clearly have no strategy” in Iran and that Tehran “humiliate” United States.
Although he did not directly respond to the threats, the German leader later called for a “reliable transatlantic partnership” within NATO.
According to information recently published in the international press, Washington would consider retaliatory measures against some Western allies, whom it accuses of lack of involvement in the conflict with Iran.
Among the scenarios discussed would be the suspension of Spain from NATO or the re-evaluation of the American position on the Falkland Islands, amid dissatisfaction with the position of the United Kingdom.
However, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has said that he is not worried about these developments, suggesting that Madrid does not consider the radical scenarios being circulated to be credible at the moment.
A possible withdrawal of US troops from key states in Europe could have major implications for regional security and NATO cohesion.
