One of the most important investigative newsrooms in Romania needs the support of the public to continue to exist: “We have money left for one month”

The investigative publication Átlátszó Erdély, one of the few independent Hungarian-language investigative platforms in Romania, needs public support.

On Wednesday, the editors published an appeal on the Facebook page and on the website of the publication in which they talk about the difficult situation they are going through and explain the reasons.

“About 60,000 euros are missing from our budget for this year. We can still pay the salaries for May for sure, but those for June are still uncertain. In the last year and a half we have signaled several times that our newsroom is in a difficult financial situation. The main reason is that our main source of income is international grants for independent newsrooms, but these are increasingly rare and of less value. And more and more newsrooms compete for them. We have eliminated all expenses that we can do without. Currently, our operation costs 12,000 euros per month”, while on the website, the article bears the title: “We have one month left. It is up to you to continue”.

The publication is calling for support for their work. They would need:

– 12 big entrepreneurs could support Átlátszó Erdély with a monthly donation of 1,000 euros.

– 120 citizens with good incomes could support Átlátszó Erdély with 100 euros per month.

– 1,200 dedicated readers could support Átlátszó Erdély with 10 euros per month.

“We are looking for 1,200 supportive readers, dedicated to press freedom, so that Átlátszó Erdély does not cease to exist!”.

Those who want to support the work of Atlátszó Erdély journalists can do so here. You can read more about the publication here, and part of the work of the journalists here can also be read in the Romanian version here.
