Iran divided internally. Rubio points to obstacles in talks with the US

During the interview, Marco Rubio was asked, among others: about what stands in the way of US-Iran peace. — Apart from the fact that the country is ruled by radical Shiite clerics — this is quite a serious obstacle. The second is that they are deeply divided internally and – I think this has always been the case, but now it is much more visible Rubio said.

Marco Rubio draws attention to the divisions in Iran

The US Secretary of State turned his attention to the Iranian political class. — People talk about moderates and radicals. In Iran, everyone is radical. But there are radicals who understand that they have to manage the country and the economy, and radicals who are motivated only by theology, he explained.

Marco Rubio further pointed out that not only members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are radicals, but also the highest spiritual leaders. — Then we have the political class, the minister of foreign affairs, the president, the speaker of parliament, the majlis [radę] — these people are also staunch supporters, but they also understand that the country must have an economy. People have to eat. They need to find a way to pay salaries in their government, he continued.

According to Rubio, Iranians are divided into radicals who understand that “it has to be balanced” and radicals “who are indifferent to all this and who have an apocalyptic vision of the future.” — Unfortunately, it is the radicals, with this apocalyptic vision of the future, who have the final power in this country – he assessed.

Rubio also spoke about the situation in Iran after the death of Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the first day of Israeli-American airstrikes. As he stated, his credibility has not yet been checked, his availability is questionable, and he has not been seen in public. “So I think that also creates tension in their society,” he concluded.

Returning to the issue of peace negotiations, Rubio said that “one of the obstacles is that our negotiators do not negotiate only with the Iranians.” — These Iranians must then negotiate with other Iranians to determine what they can agree to, what they can offer, what they are willing to do, and even who they are willing to meet with – he said.
