The cyber police explained how to check the security of your home Wi-Fi network

23 April 19:50

Cyber police have proposed a five-point security test that will allow you to find out the vulnerability of your home Wi-Fi network and make it safe.

“Check your Wi-Fi in 5 minutes: a simple security test,” said the department for organizing the fight against illegal use of information and communication technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. — We suggest you go through a short checklist. If you answer “no” to even one point, the network is already vulnerable.”

The first question on the checklist concerns changing the Wi-Fi password. The Ministry of Internal Affairs advises making it complex.

The second question is whether the login and password of the router administrator have changed. “To get to the settings, connect to your Wi-Fi, open a browser, enter 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (the address is indicated on the router case). Enter the administrator login and password (if not changed, these are also indicated on the device). Replace the standard admin/admin,” the UKB said.

The cyber police also recommended paying attention to whether WPA2 or WPA3 encryption is enabled. “In the settings, go to the “Wi-Fi”, “Security” section. Select WPA2-PSK (AES) or WPA3, set a password,” the message says.

The fourth question on the checklist concerns identifying unfamiliar connected devices. To do this, go to the “Connected devices” section in the settings – Device list – DHCP clients. “If you see unfamiliar devices, change your Wi-Fi password. Check the list regularly,” the department added.

The final question of the test is whether there is a guest network. “In the settings, find the “Guest Network” section. Turn it on, set a separate network name (for example, Home_Guest), set a separate password, limit access to the main network (usually the “client isolation” item). Use the network for guests and smart devices,” UBC concluded.
