The case of the Zondacrypto exchange (formerly BitBay) is becoming the largest financial scandal in recent years, casting a shadow over the Polish political class and secret services.

The stock exchange, which at its peak turned over a billion zlotys a month, is now “shaking on its foundations”, and its founder, Sylwester Suszek, has remained elusive since 2022. Regional Prosecutor's Office in Katowice estimates the scale of the fraud at PLN 350 million.
Russian money, “dormant” companies and the UAE thread
Minister Tomasz Siemoniak, coordinator of secret services, revealed the shocking background of the company's founding. According to him, BitBay grew up in the environment of traders of illegal fuels and cigarettes, and after it was included on the Polish Financial Supervision Authority's warning list in 2018, people appeared around the exchange Russian investors and security officials.
“This is money connected with large financial pyramids connected with Russian mafias, with Russian services” – Siemoniak warned during the last press conference.
According to information obtained by “Rzeczpospolita”, Sylwester Suszek transferred shares to three companies with an opaque “offshore” structure in the United Arab Emirates. Two of them were registered at the prestigious Burj Khalifa in Dubai. They used the so-called nominee agents – figureheads, which is a classic method of laundering money and circumventing sanctions by Russian oligarchs.

Political millions and “CPAC Rzeszów”. The key to a vault that doesn't exist.
The scandal ricochets into the Polish political scene. Prime Minister Donald Tusk revealed that funds from Zondacrypto went to entities associated with politicians, mentioning, among others: Institute of Sovereign Poland and the Good Government Foundation. The stock exchange was also to be a strategic sponsor of the CPAC conference in Rzeszów, which served to promote Karol Nawrocki just before the presidential elections.
Despite its official wealth (helicopters, luxury cars), the BitBay company was removed from the register in the summer of 2026 as having no assets.
The key to the whole matter is a wallet containing 4.5 thousand. bitcoins worth over $300 million These measures remain intact as of 2019. The current president of the stock exchange, attorney Przemysław Kral, publicly appeals to the missing Suszek to hand over the private keys to this wallet, claiming that without them the deposits are inaccessible.
