Explosion and fire in Bucharest. The firefighting operation lasted all night

The explosion occurred on Monday around 23 and affected both heating and electricity supply in Bucharest. In some areas of the Romanian capital and the Ilfov district surrounding the city, customers experienced a short-term power outage lasting up to four seconds. On Tuesday morning, about 2.2 thousand residential buildings had no hot water. Traffic lights did not work at several important points.

The fire affected, among others: two large transformers. Each of them contained about 30 tons of oil, used as a coolant. This is the main reason why the fire was so violent, with heavy smoke emissions and the need to extinguish it using nitrogen.

The authorities admit that the cause of the incident was an electrical installation failure. In addition to the transformers themselves, adjacent infrastructure elements were also destroyed, including cabling and security systems.

The fire has been extinguished and engineering assessments are currently underway to determine damage and necessary remedial measures. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
