“Do you have the guts to see how much you've lost?” A Romanian project shows players not the jackpot, but the bill

The 10-match, “100% guaranteed” ticket that you place on the way to the game or in front of the TV seems like an expensive but bearable joke. Today 50 lei, tomorrow 100, on the weekend you “make up” with something more serious and tell yourself that football is more thrilling that way. It's just that the years go by, and the sport turns from a passion into an ever-growing hole for the budget.

The gambling phenomenon has gained a lot of momentum in recent years. Only in 2023the Romanians spent approx 12.5 billion lei on online gambling in over 84 million payments with the card, i.e. around 17% of all online payments made in one year in Romania.

In the first 6 months of 2025the Romanians have already staked approx 5.5 billion lei in sports betting, lotteries and casinos, amount greater than all hotel accommodation expenses in the country combined and equivalent to the joint annual budgets of the Ministries of Justice and Culture.

At the company level, the market exploded, registering a turnover of over 15.5 billion lei in 2024, with a record net profit of 1.84 billion leiand almost half of the accumulated profits in the last 17 years were made in the post-pandemic period.
