The Sudanese military blamed the attack on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, with which it has been fighting for control of the country since April 2023. According to UN data, military operations claimed over 43,000 lives. victims and forced approximately 14 million people to leave their homes.

The UNISFA mission has been operating since 2011. The purpose of its establishment was to counteract violence and the escalation of tensions at a time when South Sudan was preparing to formally declare independence. In November 2025, the UN extended the mandate of the peacekeeping mission in Abyei, explaining that acts of violence and a wave of displacement of civilians continued to occur on the border between Sudan and South Sudan.
