“This coalition is over.” However, Kelemen Hunor asks an uncomfortable question after the PSD decision

This coalition is finished as it was formed last year”, said the leader of UDMR, Kelemen Hunor, on Monday, in the context of PSD's decision to withdraw political trust from Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.

Kelemen Hunor's statements were made to Digi24 before the officialization of the decision taken by the Social Democrats in the internal referendum held at the Parliament Palace and were broadcast during the evening, in a pre-recorded interview, after the first reaction from the head of government.

“The moment one of the members of the coalition withdraws – he withdraws his ministers, that I understood that this will be the scenario – if at the end of the day the vote is in the sense announced and the prime minister does not resign, I understood that he will not do this, and the ministers withdraw, then it means that this coalition as it was formed last year, in May – at the beginning of June, is no longer working. This means that we have a government crisis, I'm not saying political, that however, politics is more complicated and bigger, but we have a problem in the governing coalition. So, there is no parliamentary majority at that moment, I don't know what the next step will be,” said the UDMR president.

“You can go from tabula rasa and there is no coalition, we sit down at the table who think we can form a majority and everything starts from scratch. This is one of the options. And the other options are around those who remain in the government – to form a majority of parliamentarians, a supporting majority without attracting someone else to the government. Of course, there is also the option of the opposition taking over the government”, said Kelemen Hunor.

He also pointed out what will be the “biggest issue” for our country coming in the coming days. The leader of the UDMR also asked a question that, in his opinion, will “remain” the main issue that the parliamentary parties have to solve now.

“The biggest problem at the moment is that on Thursday or after Thursday – how Romania's creditors will look at our country. Again, if the interest rate for the loans with which we finance the deficit rises above 7%, we will have a short-term, medium-term problem, so this aspect must also be taken into account. I would prefer that we find a solution, in the sense of investing a government through parliament, including, if necessary, a minority government. But it remains the question: with whom? Who do you get there with?”, said the UDMR leader

“We have no reason for us (UDMR, no) to withdraw from the government”, pointed out Kelemen Hunor.

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said earlier in the evening that PSD's decision to withdraw political support in his case is “completely wrong and totally irresponsible”, stressing that he will continue to exercise his mandate as prime minister and ensure the government.

PSD decided, on Monday, to withdraw its political support to Bolojan. Approximately 5,000 members of the county organizations and the PSD National Political Council voted in the internal referendum – 97.7% were “for” withdrawing political support to Bolojan, and 2.3% voted “against”.
