how the EHF contributes to fan education

Beyond the beautiful atmosphere of the TeraPlast Arena and the the spectacular game between Gloria Bistrita and Brest (35-36)I was impressed by a detail that I noticed before and at half-time of the first leg of the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

16-17 minutes before the start of the game, a video made by the EHF was broadcast on the huge cube in the ceiling of the 3000-seat hall of Ardelense, in which, in an attractive way, using animations, the scenarios in which the referees can resort to video replay and the decisions that can be changed were explained.

Sports culture and education, crucial for a healthy sports environment

For about 30-60 seconds, fans were able to see an explanatory video in English to help them understand a matter related to the specific regulation of the game of handball.

From what I understand, these videos are shown at every Champions League match, both before kick-off and at half-time. Probably Gloria's supporters are used to them and don't even pay attention to them anymore, but for me it was a nice surprise.

I'm interested in the field of fans (I even did my dissertation on a topic related to their behaviors) and based on the studies I've read and observations I've made, we came to the conclusion that sports education and the knowledge that fans have have an effect on their behavior.

In other words, the more information fans have about a sport's rules, its history, the team they support, and the specific challenges the athletes face, the more they will be able to look at the results objectively, put the event through the filter of reason, and understand what is really happening on and off the field.

And a greater understanding would, in my opinion, lead to more balanced reactions and a healthier environment around sports.

Recent studies reveal that learning the rules of sport influences sport satisfaction and consumption

Some studies published in 2019 and 2021 by Choi Wan-yong of the University of North Florida and his collaborators investigated the relationship between the acquisition of knowledge related to the rules of sports and the level of satisfaction of fans in relation to that sport. The results showed that learning the rules of a sport influences sport satisfaction and sport consumption.

(By the way, one of the studies even stated that media sites that provide rule-based information will influence the likelihood of increased media consumption)

So it was a joy to see the TeraPlast Arena videos. Sure, it's just one small way a club or federation contributes to the development of supporters' knowledge. However, a much greater effort is needed by all those involved.

Later, at the press conference, we asked Carlos Viver, Bistrița's coach, to explain why the referees did not review the phases in which Renata De Arruda and Bianca Bazaliu were injured. Instead of taking advantage of the situation to inform the fans through the media, he refused the question, arguing that he is not used to talking about refereeing.

I didn't ask him to criticize the two officials, but only to explain if they had some objective reasons why they didn't review the phases, if it was a matter of regulation or if they simply didn't want to.

So there is still a lot of work to do. After all, we live in a country where chants and banners with racist messages still appear in stadiums. And not only do they appear, but some also try to justify them.
