China wants to seize uranium from Iran. Unofficial reports

According to the AP agency, the aim of the proposal is to de-escalate tensions and facilitate nuclear negotiations. These reports have not been officially confirmed by the authorities of Iran, China or the USA.

China maintains close relations with Iran – it is its largest trading partner and one of the few foreign buyers of oil. In 2021, the two countries signed a 25-year strategic agreement, which is crucial for the Iranian economy, which is under Western sanctions.

Beijing has so far remained on the sidelines of diplomatic activities aimed at ending the war that was started by Israel and the US on February 28. The Chinese authorities criticized the attacks carried out by both countries and the blockade of Iranian ports.

On Friday, when Iran briefly opened Hormuz, US President Donald Trump presented it as a gesture to Beijing. “China is very happy that I permanently opened the Strait of Hormuz. I did it for them too,” he wrote on the Truth Social platform.

According to American sources, after the US and Israel bombed Iranian nuclear installations in June 2025, almost 2 tons of enriched uranium remained in Iran, including 450 kg enriched to 60%.

On Friday evening, Trump announced that these supplies would be removed from Iran and stated that Tehran had agreed to indefinitely suspend its nuclear program.

Representatives of the Iranian authorities denied this; among others Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote on X that enriched uranium will never reach the United States.

Deadlock in negotiations

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Said Khatibzade said on Saturday that Tehran is not ready for a new round of direct talks with the US because Washington does not give up its maximalist demands on key issues. Khatibzade also said that Tehran would not transfer enriched uranium to the US and called it an unacceptable condition.

The date and place of the next round of US-Iran talks have not yet been set. Islamabad hosted the first meeting last weekend — the capital of Pakistan, which is a mediator in Iran-US negotiations.
