Armed attack in Kiev, investigated as an act of terrorism: Six people were killed by a Moscow-born attacker

The investigators of the Ukrainian secret service classified as a “terrorist act” the armed attack committed on Saturday in Kiev. The death toll shows six dead and 15 wounded, while the Moscow-born attacker was killed by special forces during the intervention, according to EFE, quoted by Agerpres.

The attack was carried out by a man born in 1968 who, armed with a legally registered weapon, opened fire on residents of the Holosiiv district, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported.

The incident began after the man started a fire in an apartment, most likely his own. Later, he shot at several bystanders and took refuge in a supermarket, where he took hostages before being killed by special forces.

During the attack, the man shot four people on the street, and killed the fifth after taking her hostage in the store, explained the Minister of the Interior, Igor Klimenko.

Once barricaded in the store, the man made no demands during the 40 minutes of negotiations. The neutralization order was given after he fired on a hostage, while the sixth victim later died in hospital from his injuries, mayor Vitali Kliciko also announced.

Although President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that the attacker was born in Russia, authorities have not yet confirmed whether he held Russian citizenship, only mentioning that he was a man born in 1968.
