“The government is responsible for the crisis”
— I didn't regret that veto for a second – said Nawrocki. As he noted, the government administration is responsible for the crisis, which – according to him – affected about 30,000 people. The president pointed out that the government had 11 months to implement the EU MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets) regulation, regulating the crypto-assets market, and took action – in his opinion – only at the last minute.
President Nawrocki emphasized that throughout the entire period of ZondaCrypto's activity, Polish state institutions – including the National Tax Administration, the prosecutor's office and services subordinate to the government – had the opportunity to respond. “This problem could have been solved during the company's operation,” he said, adding that the stock exchange operated internationally.
Wouldn't the bill have prevented the crisis?
The president also revealed that he received detailed information from state services regarding the situation around ZondaCrypto only after the first veto of the bill. As he noted, he had previously been “cut off from information” and the documents themselves – due to their nature – cannot be made public.
According to Nawrocki, the vetoed bill would not have prevented the current crisis or helped people who suffered losses.you. — This law did not solve the problem we have today – he said, assessing the project as an overregulation in relation to the EU MiCA regulation. The president accused the government of trying to “throw the entire cryptocurrency market out of Poland with an axe”, including entities operating honestly, instead of effectively protecting the interests of citizens.
“It's a deeply Orwellian narrative”
Nawrocki emphasized that he himself – like some politicians from the ruling camp – pointed to the necessary changes to the act. – Just as the Chains Act was not about animals, in the case of cryptocurrencies it is not about regulation, but about inciting political fights – he said.
Referring to criticism related to the veto, the president rejected accusations of acting in favor of Russia's interests. “Saying that I support the Russian Federation and Vladimir Putin in any way is a deeply Orwellian narrative,” he said. He added that when he took over the office of president, he was aware that he would also have to make unpopular decisions.
The dispute over the Act on Crypto-Assets and the situation of ZondaCrypto has become one of the main political topics in recent weeks. The government announces further work on the regulation of the sector based on EU law.
