In the south of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, chipmunks woke up after winter hibernation

April 16 10:40

In the Shushensky Bor National Park in the south of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, chipmunks have begun to awaken after winter hibernation. According to the press service, the first animal was spotted on April 8 in the Mountain Cluster.

The footage obtained by specialists shows that the chipmunk has not yet completely molted – the skin looks faded and dull.

When the first snow falls, these animals go into hibernation and wake up when the snow melts and becomes warmer. In winter, they sometimes wake up briefly to snack on supplies from their underground storerooms. The chipmunks finally emerge from their burrows towards the end of active snowmelt.

When they wake up, they actively feed to make up for the lack of vitamins. During this period, they eat young greens, tree buds, shoots, seeds and insects. By summer, the diet changes to berries and mushrooms, but in the Shushensky Bor Mountain Cluster, the main delicacy for them is pine nuts.

Earlier, at the end of March, experts recorded the awakening of chipmunks in the Krasnoyarsk Pillars National Park. Then the animal was noticed at the Eastern entrance. According to an old legend, on Stolby, the awakening of chipmunks means that spring has come and bears have come out of their dens, but there is no scientific confirmation of this.
