Marya Empty cabbage soup

On this day, the church honors the memory of St. Mary of Egypt, a Christian saint who is considered the patroness of repentant women.

It was customary for people to turn to Mary of Egypt for protection from the evil eye and bad words. It was also believed that this technique could help a woman or girl achieve this: she had to stroke her backside with her hand, then rub her face with the same hand.

Empty cabbage soup was commemorated for Mary not by chance. By April, the peasants were running out of cabbage, so they could only dream of thick cabbage soup that would hold a spoonful. No wonder they said: “You wanted sour cabbage soup in April!” The time had come to cook the April cabbage soup – empty, liquid, which served as a reason for jokes: “Shchi is worth rinsing footcloths.” In such a soup, in the absence of cabbage, they usually put nettles and sorrel, which were just beginning to turn green.

You could also learn from Mary of Egypt what the herbs would be like in the summer. If the water spreads widely, the meadows will be green and lush. We also looked at the rivers: if the ice melts easily and quickly, then the whole year will be easy and good. If ice jams form, the year will be difficult.
