Representatives from Tehran arrived in Pakistan a few hours earlier on Friday evening. The delegation consists of high-ranking political, military and economic officials. They included Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi, Secretary of the Defense Council, Governor of the Central Bank and several members of parliament, including its Speaker Mohammad Bager Ghalibaf.

Talks during a two-week ceasefire

Pakistan plays the role of host and mediator in the negotiations. Peace talks became possible after the parties to the conflict agreed on a two-week ceasefire on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. The announced cessation of hostilities allowed the dialogue to begin.

The parties have not officially confirmed the format of the meetings. According to unofficial information, the negotiations will resemble previous talks regarding the Iranian nuclear program, which took place before the start of the American-Israeli attack. The US and Iranian delegations will not talk directly, but through intermediaries.

On Friday, before arriving in Pakistan, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bager Ghalibaf, announced that a precondition for starting talks was “unlocking Iranian assets” and Israel stopping attacks on Lebanon.
