The world of cross-country skiing has been hit by extremely painful news. Norway mourns the loss of Guro Jordheim, a former top endurance racer, who lost her life in the mountains near the small town of Hemsedal in her home country.
An avalanche was fatal to him in an area he knew very well and where he spent his daily life.
A tragic incident occurred on Monday morning at 11:10 a.m. when a mass of snow broke loose in difficult mountain terrain. According to information on proxcskiing.com, Jordheim was part of a group of seven experienced off-piste cross-country skiers.
Although all the participants in the expedition had extensive experience in the high-altitude mountain environment and immediately got involved in the rescue operations after the avalanche, the balance of the tragedy is implacable.
Rescue teams received a call about four missing people. Despite the rapid mobilization of helicopters and ground teams, who battled heavy, wet snow and steep slopes, only two people could be rescued.

Unfortunately, two skiers perished under the snow mass, which, according to estimates, stretched over 250 meters. Norwegian investigators later confirmed the identities of the victims: Guro Jordheim, a 29-year-old Norwegian woman, and Max Andersson, a 34-year-old Swedish citizen, according to sport.aktuality.sk.
Jordheim was known to the Norwegian and world public especially for her excellent performances in the Ski Classics series. As a key figure in the elite Aker Dählie team, she regularly managed to finish in the top ten at the world's toughest events.
Last season, he finished 7th in Jizerská Padesátka and shortly afterwards achieved an excellent 9th in the legendary Vasaloppet.
The steps of his life were closely linked, in the last period, to Hemsedal. Not only did he live in the small town, but he was also active in the mountain service and had recently taken over the management of the family farm.
In this location he participated in his last competition, last December.
