Philip Luis (40 years old), the former Chelsea star, was fired as the team's coach Flamengodespite the fact that his last match ended in a crushing victory, score 8-0. The club made the decision in record time, announcing in a discussion of only 30 seconds that they are no longer counting on his services.

The Brazilian side's triumph over Madureira's side in the Carioca semi-finals was not enough for the former Chelsea player to keep his job. His team advanced 11-0 on aggregate in the final, but the technician was sent off after just 30 seconds.

The coach was fired by the club immediately after the press conference at the end of the game. Flamengo confirmed the decision in a statement published on social media.

Filipe Luis, sent off after an 8-0 success

“The Flamengo club informs that Filipe Luis will no longer be in charge of the senior team. Along with him, Ivan Palanco (second coach) and Diogo Linhares (physical trainer) are also leaving the club. Flamengo thanks the former player and coach Filipe Luis for everything he has achieved and shared during this period. The club wishes him success and good luck in the continuation of his professional career,” the statement said.

After this shock dismissal, the media in Brazil claimed that Luis did not know that he was going to be sacked immediately after the press conference. He was reportedly informed of the decision immediately after leaving the gym, when he was told sporting director Jose Boto wanted to have a chat with him, according to thesun.co.uk.

The conversation between the two would not have lasted more than 30 seconds. Luis was not even given the chance to say goodbye to the players as they had already left the stadium. However, he is expected to visit the club's training facility in the coming days to speak to former pupils.

Despite the decisive victory with Madureira, the start of the season was not exactly a good one for the Brazilian club. The team had their worst start to the season in a decade, losing the Brazilian Super Cup to Corinthians and the Recopa Sudamericana to the Argentines from Lanus.

Flamengo was Luis' first experience as a head coach, having taken over the team in March 2024. Last year as a player, he won several trophies with the club, including the Brazilian Cup and the Copa Libertadores.

In January, his name was heavily floated for Chelsea's technical bench following the sacking of Enzo Maresca, a job which eventually went to Liam Rosenior.

In his playing career, Filipe Luis spent one season at Chelsea between 2014 and 2015, between two spells at Atletico Madrid. In his one season at the London club, he won the Premier League title under Jose Mourinho, playing in 26 games, scoring one goal and providing an assist.
