Melania Trump usually avoids political publicity. Therefore, it was even more of a surprise when the first lady appeared before the media on Thursday. In a statement lasting just a few minutes, she flatly rejected it “lies” about alleged connections with Jeffrey Epsteinwhile demanding public hearings for this man's victims in the United States Congress.
What was supposed to be a personal form of liberation quickly turned into a political boomerang. Instead of ending the debate, Melania puts Epstein back on the national agenda — and thus she also puts pressure on her husband.
Officially, the first lady cared about her good name. Rumors about her meetings with Epstein and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell have been circulating for years, including: due to joint social appearances and an e-mail from 2002. Through her public denial, Melania wanted to regain control of her own story – and get ahead of any new revelations.
The move is consistent with her current strategy: she has already taken legal action many times against reports linking her with Epstein. Appearing in front of the cameras now sends a clear, public signal.
Counterpoint to the president
From a political point of view, Melania's tone is particularly controversial. While Donald Trump repeatedly declared that the Epstein scandal was closed and called on the country to finally “stop caring about it,” his wife focused on the victims and demanded new hearings. In this way, she clearly defied the White House line.
Additional confusion was caused by conflicting statements regarding the agreed withdrawal. While people close to the president told the American media that the president was informed about it, Trump later claimed that he didn't know anything about it. The perception has grown that the communication strategy is poorly coordinated.

At the same time, this speech coincided with a period of political weakness for the president. Parts of the Republican base continue to demand transparency about the Epstein files. By focusing attention on the victims, Melania gave these demands additional legitimacy – and therefore increased pressure on its own government.
We didn't have to wait long for reactions. Democratic members of Congress immediately expressed support for public hearings. In this way, the Epstein scandal may once again become a central conflict in domestic politics. Paradoxically, Melania's attempt to distance herself may trigger the very dynamic that the White House actually wanted to avoid.
Echoes of the Epstein files
It is unclear whether this happens consciously or is simply accepted. Melania Trump has repeatedly presented herself in the past as an independent person who implements things own priorities and does not necessarily put political consequences in the foreground.
The disclosure of Epstein's files caused an unusual boom in the USA, writes POLITICO. Dozens of people named in the files — including celebrities as well as those whose names may have simply been mentioned in the email — have turned to criminal defense attorneys to help them deal with public scrutiny or professional fallout from their relationships with Epstein and Maxwell.
In addition to Donald Trump's problems, there is also criticism about him war against Iran. Once the ceasefire is announced, the United States and Iran will hold peace talks through Pakistan. On Saturday morning, an American delegation arrived in Islamabad. The group includes Vice President JD Vance, Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and the US president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
Representatives from Tehran arrived in Pakistan a few hours earlier on Friday evening. The delegation consists of high-ranking political, military and economic officials. They included Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi, Secretary of the Defense Council, Governor of the Central Bank and several members of parliament, including its Speaker Mohammad Bager Ghalibaf.
