Impressive scenes in UCL in Barcelona and Paris, in memory of Mircea Lucescu

European football stopped for a few moments in the memory of Mircea Lucescu. The former great coach died on Tuesday evening, April 7, at the age of 80, and UEFA decided that before matches in European competitions a moment of silence be held.

The most intense moments were experienced on Wednesday evening, at the games Barcelona – Atletico Madrid, respectively PSG – Liverpool, in the “quarters” of the Champions League.

On “Parc des Princes”, the minute of silence was a minute of appreciation, of applause on the open stage for Mircea Lucescu.

The late coach's face was shown on the giant screens inside the stadium, so that all the spectators, players and members of the technical staff applauded in honor of Mircea Lucescu.

Present in the boxes next to the PSG president, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin was filmed applauding in turn.

And at Camp Nou, the atmosphere was special. A moment of silence was held before the duel between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Catalan president Joan Laporta rose to his feet, as did club officials.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick applauded alongside the players, staff and supporters. Also, the message “In memory of Mircea Lucescu” appeared on the graphics of the transmission.

In addition to the moments of silence, the players wore black armbands, another gesture of respect for the one who was Mircea Lucescu.

  • Mircea Lucescu took his first steps in football at Dinamo Bucharest, the team with which he has spent most of his career. He also performed at Știința Bucharest and Corvinul Hunedoara.

  • As a player, he won 7 championship titles and a Romanian Cup, all with Dinamo.

  • Throughout his coaching career, he trained Corvinul, the Romanian national team, Dinamo, Pisa, Brescia, Reggiana, Rapid, Inter, Galatasaray, Beşiktaş, Shakhtior, Zenit, the Turkish national team and Dinamo Kiev.

  • He won 36 trophies in his career as a technician: 9 times the championship of Ukraine, 8 times the Ukrainian Cup, 7 times the Ukrainian Supercup, 3 times the Romanian Cup, 2 times the Romanian championship, 2 times the Turkish championship, as well as the UEFA Cup, the European Super Cup, the Russian Super Cup and the Anglo-Italian Cup.
