Immediately after the death of Mircea Lucescuthe Romanian Football Federation reacted by means of a press release that also contained a message sent by the president Răzvan Burleanu.
The communiqué also contains two decisions taken by the federal authorities immediately after the death of the Romanian football legend. The matches in the next stage, regardless of the level at which they will be contested, will be preceded by a moment of silence in memory of Lucescu.
Also, the appointment of a new selector will be postponed. A decisive meeting was supposed to take place tomorrow. Mircea Lucescu held this position until Thursday, April 2.
The communique issued by the FRF
“The Romanian Football Federation expresses its boundless regret following the death of the one who was, is and will remain an absolute legend: Mircea Lucescu. Today our football loses not only a brilliant tactician, but a mentor, a visionary and a national symbol who carried the tricolor on the highest peaks of world success.
Mircea Lucescu left behind a colossal legacy, hard to match in the history of royal sport. As a player, he was the essence of elegance and intelligence on the field. Emblematic for Dinamo Bucharest, a club with which he won 7 championship titles, Lucescu also shone under the colors of the national team. The reference moment remains the World Cup of 1970, where, as captain of the “Generation of Guadalajara”, he faced legends such as Pelé and Bobby Moore.
But his true dimension of genius was seen on the technical bench. Mircea Lucescu was the coach who brought modern football to Romania, leading the national team to EURO 1984 and laying the foundations of the great team of Corvinului Hunedoara. His international successes, European trophies won, triumphs with Galatasaray and Beşiktaş in Turkey, his time at Shakhtior Donetsk in Ukraine, have placed him in the pantheon of the most successful coaches in the history of world football.
In the summer of 2024, he returned to the National Team, which he loved beyond measure. Under his leadership, Romania managed an exceptional campaign in the League of Nations, six victories out of six matches, after which our representative obtained the place in the play-off in March, for access to the World Championship this summer.
The Romanian Football Federation announces the organization of a moment of silence in memory of Mircea Lucescu before the games of the next stage, in the Super League, League 2 and League 3 competitions, but also in the Women's Super League. Goodbye, Mircea Lucescu! Thank you for everything you have given to Romanian football! God rest you in peace!
In this context full of suffering for the entire family of Romanian football, the FRF announces that the process of appointing a new selector will be suspended for an indefinite period”. appeared in the FRF press release.
Mircea Lucescu, unparalleled career in football
- Mircea Lucescu took his first steps in football at Dinamo Bucharest, the team with which he has spent most of his career. He also performed at Știința Bucharest and Corvinul Hunedoara.
- As a player, he won 6 championship titles and a Romanian Cup, all with Dinamo.
- Throughout his coaching career, he trained Corvinul, the Romanian national team, Dinamo, Pisa, Brescia, Reggiana, Rapid, Inter, Galatasaray, Beşiktaş, Shakhtior, Zenit, the Turkish national team and Dinamo Kiev.
- He won 36 trophies in his career as a technician: 9 times the championship of Ukraine, 8 times the Ukrainian Cup, 7 times the Ukrainian Supercup, 3 times the Romanian Cup, 2 times the Romanian championship, 2 times the Turkish championship, as well as the UEFA Cup, the European Super Cup, the Russian Super Cup and the Anglo-Italian Cup.
It is a black day for Romania and for world football. He has left us a man who lived through and for football every second of his existence. Mircea Lucescu was not only a coach, but a life teacher for entire generations of players. He was a man who loved this sport more than anything in life and his impact on our football is immeasurable.
Our thoughts go out to the grieving family at this trying time. We are left with his lessons, the elegance of his reign, and a huge void that will never be filled. Smooth way among the stars, Mr. Lucescu
