Iran's Marvdasht petrochemical complex was attacked by the United States and Israel, Iranian state media reported on Monday. This is the second attack targeting Iran's petrochemical plants in the last 24 hours.

State media in Iran reported that the fire caused by the attack had been contained and no significant losses were reported.

Earlier on Monday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that Israel had attacked Iran's largest petrochemical complex in Asaluyeh.

These attacks call into question negotiations aimed at getting the US and Tehran to reach a ceasefire.

In March, Israel attacked Iran's main energy source, the South Pars gas field, and its infrastructure at the nearby Asaluyeh processing center, prompting Iran to launch retaliatory attacks on energy targets across the Middle East.

US President D. Trump said after Israel's March attack on the South Pars field that Israel would not attack it again, but warned that if Iran continued attacks on Qatar's energy infrastructure, the United States would retaliate and “blow up the entire” field.

Israel: We carried out a large-scale attack on Iran's largest petrochemical complex

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Monday that the country's army carried out a large-scale attack on Iran's largest petrochemical complex, located in Asalujeh in the south of the country.

The Israeli army violently attacked the largest petrochemical complex in Iran (…), responsible for about half of the country's petrochemical production, Kac said in a video.

According to the Israeli ministry, “this is a serious blow” that means losses to the Iranian economy amounting to “tens of billions of dollars.”

Kac added that the Israeli army had been instructed to continue attacks on infrastructure crucial to Iran's economy “with full force.”

The war for raw materials in the Middle East

Iranian media reported that Israeli and US troops attacked a petrochemical complex in Marvdasht in Fars province in the south of the country on Monday. Earlier, Israel reported that its army struck another complex of Iran's oil industry, in Asalujeh on the Persian Gulf.

Iran's state news agencies, Fars and Tasnim, reported that Monday's attack on the complex in Marvdasht, with a population of over 100,000 inhabitants, caused an extensive fire. According to these reports, the fire has already been brought under control. It was emphasized that the fire and the shelling did not result in any casualties or major damage.

Earlier on Monday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Kac reported a “large-scale” air attack by that country on Iran's largest oil and gas processing complex in Asalujeh, on the Persian Gulf. According to the head of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, it was a “serious blow” to Iran's economy.

Iran's Tasnim news agency reported that the attack resulted in numerous explosions, and that companies supplying electricity, water and oxygen to petrochemical plants suffered the most. It was emphasized that the refinery part was not damaged.

On the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, at 2 Central European time, the ultimatum given by US President Donald Trump to the Iranian authorities to unblock the Strait of Hormuz expires. Otherwise, he said on Sunday, Iran “will lose all its power plants and bridges.”

A series of attacks thwarts plans for a quick ceasefire?

Iranian media reported on Monday information about a series of explosions at the complex in Asalujeh. According to local news agencies, the attack caused a power outage. The town located on the Persian Gulf is the main center of an extensive petrochemical complex that serves nearby natural gas deposits – owned by Iran and Qatar and considered the largest in the world.

The Asalujeh complex, a facility of key importance to Iran's energy sector, was already the target of Israeli shelling in mid-March. On Saturday, April 4, Israeli and US troops jointly attacked petrochemical plants in Bandar-e Mahshahr, in Khuzestan province, on the northern coast of the Persian Gulf.

According to information provided by Kac on Monday, “both plants, which together account for 85 percent of Iran's petrochemical exports, are currently out of operation.”

Since February 28, Israeli and US troops have been waging war against Iran. In retaliation, the Iranian army continues to shell targets in Israel itself and facilities related to this country and the United States located in Middle Eastern countries. Moreover, Iran is blocking the Strait of Hormuz, which has caused a significant increase in the prices of oil, natural gas and fertilizers around the world.
