Premier League leaders Arsenal exited the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage, beaten 2-1 by second-tier Southampton.
Huge surprise in the FA Cup: Arsenal, big favorites for the title in the Island, missed out on their second trophy of the season, after losing 0-2 to Manchester City in the final of the League Cup in their very previous game. In March, there was talk of a possible 'quadruple' at the Emirates. Only two trophies are now available!
Tonight, Mikel Arteta's men lost at Southampton, 7th in the Championship.
Ross Stewart opened the scoring in the 35th minute after Ben White dived under the ball and left the home striker in a 1-1 situation with Kepa.
The Gunners made run after run and finally got it in the 68th minute. He scored Viktor Gyokerssimple finish in front of the goal, 8 minutes after he had been thrown into the fray.
Arsenal, what a humiliation: eliminated by Southampton from the FA Cup
Whoever expected that to be the goal that would put the match on course was sorely mistaken. The next goal was scored by the “saints”, in the 85th minute, via Shea Charles. The Englishman scored from the opposing box, from the central area, in another phase in which the Arsenal players defended themselves deplorably.
Southampton thus achieved an unexpected victory, one that earns them tickets for the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
Manchester City also qualified there today (4-0 with Liverpool) and Chelsea (7-0 with Port Vale). The last quarter-final, West Ham v Leeds United, will take place on Sunday.
