Spring pruning of fruit crops requires special attention, especially after sudden temperature changes. The plants are weakened, so it is important to start work on time, but not earlier than the average daily temperature is above −5 °C. You also can’t tighten it – you need to cut it before the sap begins to flow.

There are two types of pruning. Formative helps to create the correct crown: you need to highlight the central conductor, shorten competing branches and remove tops. The specialist advises young trees to fix the side branches in a horizontal position – this will make the crown loose and speed up fruiting. Rejuvenating pruning involves removing old branches. It is better to leave no more than seven branches older than four years in the crown of the tree, and also cut out diseased and damaged shoots.

Two methods are used for pruning: kidney (to shorten young shoots) and on ring (to completely delete the branch). Thin branches up to two centimeters can be cut at a time. It is better to remove larger ones in two steps to avoid breaking the wood.

All cuts must be treated with garden varnish. To reduce the risk of diseases, it is recommended to add “Fitosporin” to the varnish. The tool must be sharp and disinfected before work.
