In the Krasnoyarsk Flora and Fauna Park “Roev Ruchey” they told interesting facts about the otter.
According to park experts, the otter is a member of the mustelidae family. It is related to the ferret, wolverine and badger. In Russia, the otter lives everywhere, from the western borders to the Far East. In the Krasnoyarsk Territory, it lives in clean rivers with fast flows and rocky bottoms.
“The otter is an animal that knows how to enjoy the moment. If you see an otter lying on its back in the water and holding a stone on its stomach, do not think that it is training its abs. She's just… eating. Or plays. Or both at the same time. They love to go down the slides. In winter – from snowy ones, in summer – from clayey ones,” said Roevoy Ruchek.
In nature, these animals are loners. The female raises the children alone. Young otters stay with their mother for up to a year, and then go to look for their own area. In nature they live 6-11 years, in captivity – up to 20.
Research shows that otters are able to differentiate between numbers of objects, such as how many fish there are in a school. In seawater, otters often sleep on their backs, holding the paws of their relatives with their paws so that they are not carried away by the current. The otter can reach speeds of up to 12 km/h, dive to a depth of 15 meters and hold its breath for 4-5 minutes.
In addition, these animals save ecosystems. In reservoirs where otters have disappeared, there are often fewer fish. Because they eat sick and weak fish, preventing infections from spreading. They are river nurses.
