Orthodox people on this day celebrate the memory of Saint Tryphon of Pechenga, who lived on the Kola Peninsula in the 16th century.
In Rus', Saint Tryphon was revered as the patron saint of sailors. It was to him that they prayed in case of danger. Of course, he is remembered on this day: everyone who is connected with the sea, if possible, goes to church and lights a candle to Saint Tryphon.
People noticed that the day was beginning to arrive, and believed that the sun was sending its children to the earth – rays that drive away evil spirits. However, the sun's rays were still weak and they needed help. To do this, it was necessary to take hot coals out into the yard early in the morning and pour them onto the snow – this way they could frighten the evil spirits. “Get off the porch and let the golden coals roll across the yard,” people advised.
As a rule, there was severe frost on Tryphon. “It’s so cold that the birds freeze in flight,” they said about this. The weather that day predicted what March would be like.
