After missing out on qualifying for this summer's World Cup, Romania's national team will try to get tickets for the next final tournament, the 2028 European Championship, hosted by England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. However, the mission will be extremely complicated, and the chance of having easier opponents will depend on the route from the League of Nations.

Now, Romania's next official matches are only in autumn, when the new edition of the League of Nations will begin, and depending on the course and results, the polls for the European preliminaries will be determined.

The “Tricolori” won League C and will play in League B in the fall. The opponents will be Sweden, Poland and Bosnia, and the results will influence the make-up of the ballots for the next qualifying campaign for a final tournament.

The League of Nations, a decisive step towards the Euro 2028 preliminaries

  • If Romania finishes in 1st place in the League of Nations, it will promote to League A;

  • If Romania finishes in 2nd place in the League of Nations, it will play a play-off for promotion to League A;

  • If Romania finishes in 3rd place in the League of Nations, it will play a play-off to stay in League B;

  • If Romania finishes in 4th place in the League of Nations, it will be relegated to League C.

Later, depending on the results of the League of Nations, the polls for the Euro 2028 preliminaries will be drawn up.

  • If Romania will finish the Nations League group on 1st place or 2nd place, then it will be in urn 2 at the draw for the Euro preliminaries; So, in theory, they would have only one difficult opponent in the group;

  • If Romania will finish the Nations League group on 3rd place or 4th place, then it will be in urn 3 at the draw for the Euro preliminaries; So, in theory, they would have two difficult opponents in the group.

The statisticians have made the calculations regarding the ballot boxes for the Euro 2028 preliminaries

And the statisticians from Football Meets Data made a simulation of how the polls could look for the Euro 2028 preliminaries. According to them, Romania would be in poll 3, which means they would finish in 3rd or 4th place in the Nations League group.

The simulated polls for the Euro 2028 qualifiers:

  • Urn 1: France, Italy, Turkey, Germany, Netherlands, Serbia, Spain, England, Croatia, Portugal, Norway, Denmark

  • Urn 2: Belgium, Greece, Czech Republic, Wales, Switzerland, Scotland, Ukraine, Hungary, Austria, Kosovo, Poland, Sweden

  • Urn 3: Slovenia, North Macedonia, Georgia, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Israel, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Montenegro, Slovakia, Iceland

  • Urn 4: Armenia, Bulgaria, Finland, Kazakhstan, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Belarus, Faroe Islands, Latvia, Estonia, Moldova, San Marino

  • Urn 5: Azerbaijan, Malta, Lithuania, Andorra, Gibraltar, Liechtenstein

The “Tricolori” could have a fire path in the Euro 2028 preliminaries

Thus, if they were in ballot 3, the Romanian national team could even have an extremely complicated route in the preliminaries, with opponents such as France and Belgium, therefore a much more difficult mission on the way to the European.

In the European preliminaries there will be 12 groups of 4 or 5 teams each. The 12 group winners and the best 8 2nd placed teams qualify directly for the final tournament.

England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the host countries, do not have qualification for the final tournament assured before the qualifiers. However, there is a catch: two places in the final tournament are reserved for two home teams that have the best results in the preliminaries but do not achieve direct qualification.

In addition to the 12 group winners, the 8 runners-up and the two host countries going to the Europeans, there will be a play-off, where there will be the other 4 teams from the 2nd place, who did not qualify directly, and the group winners from the Nations League who did not qualify via the classic route, the preliminaries.
