ANAF coup: 22 kilograms of gold and 69 million lei seized after extensive checks

Anti-fraud inspectors confiscated almost 69 million lei from a company in Bucharest that was exchanging foreign currency without authorization. In another action, they lifted almost 22 kg of gold and over 1.3 million lei from a pawn shop.

ANAF anti-fraud inspectors discovered a currency exchange scheme carried out without authorization by a company from Bucharest and ordered the confiscation of a huge amount, according to a statement sent by the institution.

“Inspectors of the General Anti-Fraud Fiscal Directorate (DGAF) within ANAF confiscated the amount of 68.93 million lei (the equivalent of over 13.5 million euros), related to currency exchange activities carried out without an operating authorization, by a company from Bucharest”ANAF informed through a press release.

Specifically, after the company's authorization was withdrawn, it allegedly continued to operate foreign exchange transactions totaling almost 69 million lei. For these operations, the inspectors applied the measure of confiscation, according to the legislation in force.

In order to implement the sanction, the control teams collected all the available amounts, both in lei and in foreign currency, found in the nine work points of the company.

More than 20 kilograms of gold, seized in another control

In a separate action, anti-fraud inspectors targeted a pawn shop, where they discovered irregularities related to the record of transactions and stocks, as well as the way precious metals were traded.

Following the checks, 21.95 kilograms of gold, valued at over 8.5 million lei, were confiscated, as well as the amount of 1.37 million lei, from the sale of some bars.

“In addition to these sanctions, the company was penalized for contravention and with a fine of 10,000 lei. The company was selected based on the risk analysis and verified within the action aimed at the production, processing and marketing of precious metals, as well as the provision of services regarding these goods”the statement also states.

ANAF representatives emphasize that such controls are part of a wider strategy to combat illegal economic activities and protect the state budget, by applying the instruments provided by law and maintaining a fair competitive climate.
