Ilie Bolojan says that the excise duty will be reduced “in the first stage” only on diesel, not on gasoline. “Solidarity Fund” from the “exceptional profits” of the companies

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared on Monday evening that the decision to lower the excise duty on fuels “in the first stage” only targets diesel, which represents “more than 70% of fuel consumption in Romania”.
On Monday evening, on Digi24, the prime minister explained that the decision was taken to intervene on the excise tax, because a decrease in VAT risked leading to an infringement procedure from the European Commission.
“First of all, we will focus on diesel fuel. In the first stage we focus on diesel fuel, because this is where the biggest increases were. Over 70% of fuel consumption in Romania is diesel fuel. Acting in stages on this area, there is an impact on two thirds of those who use cars in Romania”, declared the Prime Minister.
Asked again if the soon-to-be-effective measure only refers to the diesel excise tax, he confirmed: “That is the hypothesis we are working on. Why? Because, on the one hand, this is where the biggest increases have been. On the other hand, if we want to have an effect, we have to intervene where the effect is maximum and has an impact on a significant number of citizens.”
“This means that we are working on one or two working hypotheses, which will be presented in the following days, in such a way that, on the one hand, we have the maximum impact in the market, but, on the other hand, we also take into account the possibilities we have. Because all these reductions implicitly mean an expense that the state budget pays”, added Ilie Bolojan.
Bolojan said that “the Ministry of Finance is working these days on the simulations that must be done”, in order to accurately calculate the impact of the measure, both in terms of price effects, “the total cost of this reduction, which must be covered from the budget”.
“In the coming days we will announce exactly what that discount will be,” he continued.
