A bill submitted by AUR, SOS and POT, as well as by former members of the parties who joined the non-affiliated groups and PACE – First Romania, in the Senate, removes the ban on paying tribute to war criminals or legionnaires, such as Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, Horia Sima or Ion Antonescu.

Among the AUR signatories, party leader George Simion is missing, but senator Sorin Lavric, one of the ideologues of the political formation, appears.

What the project provides

“The use of freedom of conscience, expression, information, association – to defend the Romanian identity is recognized as fundamentally legitimate and cannot be restricted in any way”provides paragraph 2 of article 3 of the draft law.

Article 4 provides for the full repeal of several normative acts: Law 107/2006, GEO 31/2002, Law 217/2015, Law 157/2018 and Law 241/2025, which concern the fight against fascism, racism and xenophobia.

The signatories justify the need for the initiative through the fundamental freedoms of the citizen in a democratic state. “Under the pressure of excessively restrictive legislative and administrative currents, the space of freedom of expression, freedom of conscience and freedom of association was often subjected to interpretations that generated fear, self-censorship and legal uncertainty. In a mature democratic state, the citizen should not be put in a position to fear that the expression of attachment to national values, history, culture and interests may become the object of arbitrary interpretations”, indicates the statement of reasons of the project.
