Shuster was born in 1952 in Vilnius (Lithuania). In 1971, he emigrated to Canada with his parents. In 1976 he graduated from the Faculty of Biochemistry and Physiology at McGill University in Montreal, after which he moved to Italy. Since 1978 he has been engaged in journalism. Covered military operations in Afghanistan, the Middle East, Nicaragua, Chad for Newsweek, Der Spiegel, Libération, La Repubblica.

In 1988 he began collaborating with Radio Liberty, and from 1996-2001 he headed the Moscow office of the radio station. In the Russian Federation, he also worked for NTV, where he hosted the programs “Freedom of Speech”, “Hero of the Day” and commentated on Champions League football matches.

From 2005 to 2022 he worked in Ukraine. His shows were aired on the channels ICTV, “Inter”, “First National”, “Channel 24”, “112 Ukraine”, “1+1”, “Ukraine”.
