According to Economica, diesel fuel rose in March by 2.03 lei per liter, and standard gasoline by 1.23 lei per liter.

At other gas stations, the price of premium diesel is approaching a new threshold of 11 lei per liter, Economica writes. At OMV, the company's premium diesel, Maxx Motion Diesel, costs 10.97 lei per liter.

New measures announced by the Government

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan announces that a new set of measures will be taken, “until the end of Monday” to reduce fuel prices, most likely it will be the reduction of the excise tax, writes News.ro.

Ilie Bolojan spoke, in an interview granted to G4Media, about the declaration of the crisis situation on the oil market: “This first measure aims at three objectives. On the one hand, to be able to intervene in such a way that if we have a supply crisis, we can limit our exports of diesel and crude oil, not to allow increases in additions compared to last year's average, to avoid speculative prices and to limit the biofuel component, which is increasing the price of fuel.”.

The prime minister states that, on Monday morning, a new meeting of the working group will take place.

“We propose that, by the end of Monday, we come up with a second measure that would mean an intervention to reduce the taxes that are set for fuels”, the prime minister also declared.

He explained that for the VAT reduction “we have an infringement component with the European Union”: “If we applied it, it would mean that we are creating this problem for ourselves. From the point of view of excise duties, it is the easiest solution and we will very likely go for this aspect”.

The Prime Minister explained that there are two working hypotheses that will be analyzed in the coming days and more calculations must be made.

“Let's estimate what would be the capacity to reduce the excise duty that the Romanian state can bear, both from the point of view of the duration in which this scheme would be applied (…) but also, a second principle is related to a fair cost for everyone, in the sense that practically everything that the additional state budget collected on the value-added tax component this month, as a result of this increase, will be returned to the citizens of Romania through the excise duty reduction that will be made”, he explained the prime minister.

He warned that any measure taken must not have collateral effects.

“If you come up with other measures or if you don't think about them properly, there is a risk of generating supply blockages (…) You can also create strong syncope on the import side of fuel, crude oil or diesel, for example, where the demand is much higher than gasoline on the Romanian market”, explained the prime minister.

The prime minister warned that the longer the conflict, the more difficult the situation will become.

“The best situation we can imagine is to reach a form of armistice or to unblock traffic through the Gulf area, in such a way as to resume the global supply of fuel. Because the effects, as we see them, are unfavorable to all economies”, declared the prime minister.

Asked if there is a plan B for the budget in the event that the conflict in Iran is prolonged, Bolojan stated: “In the conditions in which such a situation would happen, things will certainly have to be reset. I hope we avoid such a situation because it does not only affect us, but, as I told you, the entire global economy.”

On Thursday, through the Emergency Ordinance adopted at the meeting, the government declared a crisis situation on the crude oil and/or petroleum products market between April 1, 2026 and June 30, 2026 and instituted a package of measures to protect citizens and the economy.
