Germany limits fuel price increases. The Bundestag adopted an important change

Since the end of February, due to the conflict between the USA and Israel with Iran, fuel prices in Germany often exceed EUR 2 per liter.
If the bill passed by the Bundestag is also approved by the Bundesrat (the upper house of the German parliament), Fuel prices in Germany will only be able to be increased once a day – at noon.

Simultaneously price reductions are to be possible at any time.

Greater control over fuel companies
The package also assumes tightening antitrust law. The aim is to limit the dominant position of large fuel companies and increase competition on the market.
Companies will be obliged to be more transparent regarding their pricing policies. In the event of sharp increases, the burden of proof will be reversed – companies will have to demonstrate that the price increase was justified.
Additionally, the antitrust office will receive broader powers, which will enable it to respond more quickly to unjustified price increases.

German government: this is only the beginning of changes on the fuel market
The government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz announces that The adopted package is only the first step. As Merz himself emphasized, the new regulations may not be enough to reduce fuel prices to a level acceptable to consumers.
The solutions considered include: a temporary reduction in energy tax, an increase in relief for commuters, the introduction of maximum fuel prices or a tax on extraordinary profits of companies.
