Defeat of the Republicans. They lost in the district where Donald Trump lives

According to The Hill, Democrat Emily Gregory, owner of a small fitness company, defeated Republican and financial advisor Jon Maples. At stake was an open seat in the Florida House of Representatives in the 87th congressional district. It covers part of Palm Beach County, including the US president's private estate, Mar-a-Lago.

The duel was fierce. After counting the votes, Gregory won just over 51 percent, and Maples received less than 49 percent. Donald Trump voted by mail in Tuesday's elections and supported the Republican candidate.

The Hill recalls that the elections took place after the decision of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who last August appointed Republican Mike Caruso as county clerk. However, this is not the first recent victory for Democrats in Florida. In December 2025, Eileen Higgins defeated Emilio Gonzalez for the mayor of Miami.

Democrats celebrate victory in Florida

The triumph was announced on social media by the chairwoman of the official Democratic Party committee that elects Democrats to state governments (Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee).

“Mar-a-Lago State's district just changed from red to blue, which should make Republicans concerned about their chances in November,” wrote Heather Williams, referring to the so-called half elections. In the middle of the president's term, Americans will elect representatives of the House of Representatives and one third of the Senate.
