Iceland's Foreign Minister Katrin Gunnarsdottir told Reuters that she was optimistic about her country's accession to the European Union in 2028. In her opinion, the most difficult chapters in the negotiations would be fishing and agriculture.

The Icelandic government has proposed August 29 for a referendum on Iceland's resumption of accession negotiations with the EU, which were suspended in 2013 after the Eurosceptic government took power.
– We see that it is worth having a voice at the table – said the minister.
According to her, from the very beginning, negotiations should focus on the most difficult issues, such as fishing, agriculture and the labor market.
– If we do this, I am optimistic about our entry into the EU before the end of 2028 – she said.
Polls show that Icelanders' increased interest in EU membership is due to the rising cost of living and Russia's full-scale attack on Ukraine. (PAP)
