The Audi Formula 1 team has officially confirmed the departure of team principal Jonathan Wheatley. The foreign press anticipates that Wheatley will join the Aston Martin team to take over from Adrian Newey.

Wheatley's departure from Audi is with “immediate effect”, the team explained, and only Mattia Binotto remains at the helm, who will also take over Wheatley's position.

The Audi team boss left after just two races: Jonathan Wheatley is reportedly on his way to Aston Martin

The official Formula 1 account made the official announcement on social media: “Jonathan Wheatley will leave the role of team principal at the Audi team. The move is effective immediately. Mattia Binotto will continue to lead the team and has taken over the role of team principal.”

Aston Martin had already announced that Adrian Newey would remain at the helm of the team, and the expectation was that he would give up the post of team boss and deal only with the technical side. Newey, after mis-engineering the car, was reportedly demoted to deputy and Wheatley was set to take over as team principal, according to motorsport.com.

Wheatley and Newey worked together for 20 years at Red Bull, where Jonathan was sporting director. Wheatley's Formula 1 career began as a mechanic and worked successively at Benetton, Renault and Red Bull. He took over as team boss at Audi a year ago and shared responsibilities with Mattia Binotto, who runs the entire Audi project. The team that entered this year's “Grand Circus” stated that “the structure of the team will be fully established at a later date” after it became clear that Binotto will also take over Wheatley's duties.

In its debut season, Audi managed to collect two points in two races. Aston Martin has had a terrible start to the season and has never been in the points at the moment.
