“The United States is in a difficult situation.” Băsescu says that Trump did not achieve his goals in Iran, but “fundamental others have appeared”

Former President Traian Băsescu said that the United States has not yet achieved its goals of regime change in Tehran and the destruction of enriched uranium from the Iranian nuclear program, but “instead, new fundamental goals have emerged” that put Washington “in a difficult situation.”

Commenting on the situation in the Middle East, on Friday, on B1 TV, the former president of Romania said that “the United States is in a difficult situation in the Middle East at the moment.”

“The United States entered this war together with Israel, letting us understand (…) that they have two objectives, to destroy that enriched uranium and to change the regime”, added Traian Băsescu.

He stated that so far neither of the two objectives has been achieved.

“Instead, new fundamental objectives have emerged. One is the reopening, in safety and complete freedom, of traffic on Hormuz. The United States will never be able to say that they have won the war with Iran as long as Iran controls traffic through Hormuz. I think they have not evaluated this extraordinary difficulty that Hormuz represents,” continued Traian Băsescu.

Another unrealized goal, in his opinion, is “to regain the confidence of the allies” that the US has in the Middle East, who have seen their various areas hit by Iranian attacks even though Washington was supposed to guarantee their security.

“The United States guaranteed the security of the Gulf countries, they guaranteed the security of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, all the oil supplying countries, which are and were, in their time, the countries that generated the petrodollars (…). They are the countries that imposed the dollar as a means of payment for hydrocarbons and remained loyal allies of the United States, and at the same time the United States guaranteed their security. Well, here are the refineries, terminals, objectives from these countries were hit hard”, Băsescu added.

Băsescu, about the operation in Hormuz: “Extremely difficult”

Asked about the offensive announced by the US to reopen Hormuz, the former Romanian head of state said that this strait is “easy to defend by the Iranians”.

“Unquestionably I would like to clarify one thing, the strait is not mined. There are no mines in the strait. As proof, Tehran approves some ships of friendly countries to pass through the strait. If the traffic side was mined, surely no one would pass,” he continued.

Traian Băsescu believes that “removing the strait from Iranian control is an extremely difficult operation”.

“Because the entire northern part of the strait is dominated by Iranian territory. In order to make the traffic in the Strait of Hormuz safe, you have to destroy all the means of attack that Iran has on its side of the strait, so it will be a difficult operation”, former president Traian Băsescu also declared.
