Poland breaks the record for gas exports. Ukraine is not the only destination

The terminal in Świnoujście itself with a regasification capacity of 8.3 billion cubic meters. annually covers about half of the gas demand in Poland. The other half is taken care of by the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline, which has a capacity of up to 10 billion cubic meters, and last year approx. 8.2 billion cubic meters were transported through it. And yet, the LNG terminal in Gdańsk is still under construction, which will be launched in the first quarter of 2028 and is expected to have a processing capacity of over 6 billion cubic meters. gas. The cost is expected to exceed PLN 6 billion.
And we also have our own mining. Over 3 billion cubic meters. As a result, we have already achieved the capacity to supply neighboring countries with gas. Only in the first quarter of this year, gas shipments abroad may exceed 1 billion cubic meters, said the president of Gaz-System, Sławomir Hinc.
Poland a “regional player” in gas
The operator's plan for the entire year 2026 is: breaking the record from 2025, when gas transmission abroad reached approximately 2 billion cubic meters. Ukraine remains the main export market for Poland.
Hinc reported that the plan for 2026 is to beat this “unprecedented” result.
— The export transmission results in the first months of the year allow me to say with a high degree of confidence that only in the first quarter of this year we can exceed 1 billion cubic meters. – said the president of the gas transmission pipeline operator.
In his opinion, these data show that Poland and Gaz-System are already becoming a regional player.
Not only Ukraine receives gas from Poland
— This record export is directed not only to Ukraine, but also to other countries in the region. For example in February, the gas we sent supported Lithuania – he added, while emphasizing that Ukraine remains the main export market for Poland.
He informed that at the end of last year the operator completed the expansion of measurement systems on the Polish-Ukrainian border, which allowed it to offer more transmission capacity towards Ukraine. Gaz-System does not plan other large investments in connection with exports to Ukraine.
— We do not plan to make any other large investments for now. However, this year we want to carry out the so-called an incremental procedure, i.e. examining the need for a long-term increase in capacity towards Ukraine. This procedure has already been implemented by Gaz-System in the past and has not met with any interest so far, said the president of Gaz-System.
— We want to verify the market once again and check whether there are long-term entities interested in increasing the capacity of the Polish transmission system towards Ukraine and reserving transmission services for export. The results of this study should be known in the second half of the year, he added.
