Israel attacked gas extraction infrastructure in Pars, prompting a full-scale retaliation by Iran that launched missiles and drones at energy targets in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Among the targets was the world's largest liquefied gas production facility.
The war in the Gulf knows a new escalation, after Israel attacked the gas exploitation facilities in South Pars, the largest natural gas extraction field in the world. Asaluyeh refineries were targeted. Iran also reported that a strike targeted the Bushehr nuclear power plant, CNN reports.
Gulf countries, unhappy with the Israeli attack
The first attack on Iran's energy infrastructure prompted the authorities in Tehran to announce that it would resort to similar attacks in the Gulf countries. Thus, warnings were sent to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar to withdraw their personnel from energy facilities.
“These aggressive actions will lead to nothing for the American-Zionist enemy and their supporters. Rather, they will complicate their situation and could lead to uncontrollable consequences that will affect the whole world,” Iran's President Massoud Pezeshkian wrote on X.
Moreover, the Gulf states reacted negatively immediately after the attack on the Iranian gas extraction field. Majed al-Ansari, spokesman for Qatar's Foreign Ministry, said the Israeli attack was “a dangerous and irresponsible step in the course of military escalation in the region”. A similar condemnation came from Oman.
Iran soon retaliated. Thus, four rockets heading towards Raid, the Saudi capital, were intercepted, and the rest of them fell in several parts of the city, injuring four people. The Saudi military also intercepted several drones that were heading towards gas production facilities. Another drone was shot down in Al-Kharj governorate.
Massive fire at a liquefied gas facility in Qatar
Air raid alarms were also heard in Bahrain, where the population was urged to stay sheltered.
More successful were the strikes on Qatar, where the Ministry of Interior announced the outbreak of a fire in the Ras Laffan area, where the largest gas liquefaction facility in the world is located.
“Emergency response teams were deployed to contain the resulting fires, with extensive damage,” QatarEnergy said, adding that there were no casualties.

Later, the authorities in Doha announced that they had managed to intercept four Iranian missiles, but one fell at Ras Laffan. The Qatari Foreign Ministry said the attack was “a flagrant violation of state sovereignty as well as a direct threat to national security,” according to Al-Jazeera.
Later, two Iranian missiles were intercepted, also targeting the Ras Laffan energy installations. Qatar produces about 20% of the world's liquefied gas.
Iran also attacked an Iraqi army airbase in Kirkuk. Also during the evening, the United Arab Emirates announced that air defenses are involved in repelling an Iranian attack with drones and missiles. Simultaneously, other Iranian rockets were fired at Israel, injuring three people in Petah Tikva.
